The Imported State: The Westernization of Political Order by Bertrand Badie,

The Imported State: The Westernization of Political Order by Bertrand Badie,
This book traces the rise of the modern state -- a mode of organizing political power within a closed territory -- in post-Enlightenment Europe politics in western europe and its spread to the remainder of the world, especially colonial politics in western europe and postcolonial societies. The result of a long process of evolution dating back to the Roman Empire, this new form of state was characterized by the coincidence of public power politics in western europe and public space politics in western europe and the legalization of political politics in western europe and social relations. Intimately linked to the transformation of Western European cultures at a time when their economic might allowed them to conquer many regions of the world, the modern state provided a model that was adopted in most countries. The book analyzes the different conditions in which the modern state was grafted onto different cultural realities: a metropolitan model adopted by settlers or imposed as an instrument of colonial domination, or a representation of modernity selected by non-Western leaders out of fascination for its alleged efficiency politics in western europe and rationality. The author shows that, from the beginning, various logics of importation led non-Western cultures to invent their own practices of the state, thereby transforming the original model. In many countries, notably in postcolonial societies, discrepancies appeared between political actions politics in western europe and political representations politics in western europe and principles on which the state was supposed to rest. This has often led to political crises politics in western europe and breakdowns of legality politics in western europe and legitimacy, politics in western europe and to the formation of new types of social relations in spaces the state cannot control. At the international level, a similar phenomenon can be seen: international networks, based on trade links, religion, politics in western europe and culture, are now ableto bypass official interstate relations.

Early modern Europe - The early modern period is a term used by historians to refer to the period in Western Europe and its first colonies, that spans the time between the Middle Ages and the Industrial Revolution that has created modern society. The early modern period is characterized by the rise to importance of science, cumulative and increasingly rapid technological progress, secularized civic politics and capitalist economics, all monitored by the nation state.

Western Europe - Western Europe is distinguished from Eastern Europe by differences of history and culture rather than by geography. However, these boundaries of Europe are subject to considerable overlap and fluctuation, which makes differentiation difficult.

Politics of Europe - The politics of Europe deals with the continually evolving politics within the continent. It is a topic far more detailed than other continents due to a number of factors including the long history of nation states in the region as well as the modern day trend towards increased political unity amongst the European states.
